Empowering NATO’s Technological Edge

Please join the Center for Strategic and International Studies for a conversation with John-Mikal Størdal, Director of NATO’s Science & Technology Organization’s (STO) Collaboration Support Office (CSO). Mr. Størdal will join Rachel Ellehuus, Deputy Director and Senior Fellow, Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program to discuss his organization’s role in empowering NATO allies and partners to maintain their technological edge over potential adversaries given an increasingly complex security environment and the evolving nature of warfare.

The STO is the world’s largest collaborative forum for science and technology research in security and defense, comprising a network of about 5,000 scientists who execute over 300 research activities per year. Mr. Størdal leads the CSO, the executive office of the STO responsible for coordinating and supporting defence-related science and technology research and development activities between NATO member and partner nations. Prior to this role, he was appointed as the Director General of the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) – the key institution for defence-related research and development in Norway – after posts as the Chief of Staff, Director of Research and director of various other divisions, and a scientist within the FFI since joining in 1989. From 2012-2021, he served as the Norwegian Principal Member on the NATO Science & Technology Board (STB) and the European Defence Agency (EDA) R&T Steering Board.

This event was made possible through general support to CSIS.

Texas Islamic Scholar Abdulrazzak Junaid: Feminism Aims to Enslave Women in Capitalist Society [Video]

American Islamic scholar Abdulrazzak Junaid said in a Friday sermon delivered at the Mesquite Islamic Center in a suburb of Dallas, Texas that the idea of feminism aims only to “enslave” women in capitalist societies. Junaid explained that this means that women must work for their bosses and make money instead of caring for their children. Junaid added that it is Islam that gave women their rights and that dignifies them “at a level no Western society can match.” The sermon was posted on the Mesquite Islamic Center’s official YouTube channel on January 14, 2022.

Michigan Islamic Scholar: Aafia Siddiqui – an Icon of Muslim Women Held Unjustly in Prison [Video]

On September 18, 2021, a video was uploaded to a YouTube channel called "Shaikh Jibril" in which Michigan Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Musa Jibril praised Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist who is serving an 86-year prison sentence at Federal Medical Center, Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas for attempted murder of U.S. military personnel and who is known for her post-9/11 affiliation with Al-Qaeda and Islamists. Sheikh Jibril said that in the past, capturing women was considered a declaration of war, and that Muslim leaders would “eradicate towns off the face of the earth” when such a thing happened. He said that Muslims should never abandon their brothers or sisters in a time of need, and that Siddiqui is an “icon for the plight of Muslim women held unjustly in prisons all over the globe.” In addition, Sheikh Jibril said that the Islamic justice system is just and moral, while in the American justice system, a jury comprised of "crackheads" and "meth addicts" convicts people. Furthermore, Sheikh Jibril said that U.S. authorities remove Muslim children from their homes in order to turn them into polytheists. The Shaikh Jibril YouTube channel is purportedly managed by Sheikh Jibril's students.
