Why “Anti-Racist” School Curricula Are Hostile to Free Speech [Video]

Albemarle County Public Schools in Virginia adopted a so-called “Anti-Racism Policy” in February 2019.

During staff orientation, one district leader who helped develop the Critical Race Theory-infused policy made its implications clear. He told staff to think about whether they were on the “anti-racism school bus,” whether they “need help finding your seat and keeping your seat,” or whether “it’s time for you to just get off the bus.” For white students and staff, it’s about confessing guilt for “white privilege.” And for everyone, it’s about fighting against and dismantling “white culture.”

As one teacher told parents in an online forum, so-called “anti-racism” would be “woven through in all of their classes in Albemarle County.” That means there’s no way for parents to opt-out their children from this relentless onslaught of indoctrination.

Policies like these treat students differently based on their race. And students are told they are “racist” if they simply don’t affirm the district’s beliefs or agree to join the fight against “white culture.”

That’s why five families in the Albemarle County School District filed a lawsuit with the help of Alliance Defending Freedom.

Curricula and training like Albemarle County’s are hostile to free speech. It forbids any objections and punishes dissenters. And because it labels Christianity as “oppressive,” it is hostile to the religious beliefs of these families — and to millions of Americans from across the political spectrum. All of that violates the First Amendment’s guarantees, which lie at the heart of the American promise.

That’s a sacrifice no parent and no child should ever have to make.
