U.S. and German Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific

Please join CSIS for a conversation with Petra Sigmund, Director General for the Asia Pacific at the German Federal Foreign Office. The war in Ukraine ushered in a new era not just for transatlantic relations but for European foreign and security policy. Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s announcement of a Zeitenwende (new era) for Germany with a dramatic increase in defense spending has implications not only for Russia and European security but also for the Indo-Pacific. How will a new German foreign policy impact the Indo-Pacific? What does this mean for Europe’s approach to China and Asia?

Heightened security, economic, and political challenges in the Indo-Pacific have led to increased attention to the region by the United States and its transatlantic allies, as evidenced by the recent Indo-Pacific strategies of the United States, Germany, and the European Union, as well as some increased military activity in the region. This conversation is an opportunity to discuss how the U.S. and European allies should best align their approaches, through the lenses of both military and geo-economic competition. What are the areas of convergence and divergence in U.S. and German views of the region, and in which areas should they focus their cooperation? What is Germany’s (and Europe’s) greatest comparative advantage in the region? What will security in the Indo-Pacific look like in ten years’ time?

This event is made possible by generous support from the German Mission in the United States.

Book Release Press Conference: The CCP is at War with America [Video]

The Center for Security Policy has just released a new “Team B” product – an exercise in competitive analysis that strongly challenges the Director of National Intelligence’s September 2021 conclusion that the provenance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus cannot be determined. The Team, co-chaired by former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Pete Hoekstra and former Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Lieutenant General William “Jerry” Boykin, U.S. Army (Ret.) and comprised of intelligence professionals, other national security practitioners and subject matter experts, concluded that: - There is no evidence that the virus emerged naturally;- There is, by contrast, significant circumstantial evidence that it came from a PRC biological weapons laboratory; and- The virus was deliberately unleashed on the world by the Chinese Communist Party when it allowed millions of travelers from Wuhan to fly internationally, even as it was locking down movement within China. The authors, identified collectively as Team B III (in the tradition of the official group that produced the first Team B exercise in competitive analysis in 1976 and a second one sponsored by the Center for Security Policy in 2010 entitled, Sharia: The Threat to America), call their report: The CCP is at War with America. Acclaimed China expert Gordon G. Chang wrote the Foreword. The book can be purchased here:https://ccpatwar.com/

Chinese FM Spokeswoman Hua Chunying on Pelosi’s Taiwan Visit: The U.S. Is Approaching Our Red Line [Video]

In a statement posted to the CCTV Video News Agency YouTube channel on August 2, 2022, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying spoke about U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. Hua warned the United States that it should bear full responsibility for its “provocative” actions that have led to an escalation of tensions across the Taiwan Straits, and she said that these actions are proof of America’s “hegemonic mentality” and “gangster logic.” She said that the U.S. must continue to abide by the One-China Principle in accordance with its foreign policy promises and that it must stop supporting Taiwanese “secessionists” and provoking China. In addition, she warned that the U.S. has been “closing in” on China’s “red line,” and that it would be legitimate for China to take any countermeasures it sees fit.

Chinese Journalist Hu Xijin: US Military Intervention in Taiwan Would Be Suicide for American Troops [Video]

In a video uploaded to the YouTube channel of the CCP-run Global Times outlet on July 20, 2022, former Global Times Editor-in-Chief Hu Xijin spoke about Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper’s recent statement that the One-China principle is useless and that the U.S. should abandon its strategic ambiguity vis-à-vis the Taiwan Straits. Hu said that on the same day, the USS Benfold sailed through the Taiwan Straits, and he warned that the Chinese military can easily sink the ship and keep American forces far away from the Chinese coastline if war breaks out. In addition, Hu said that Esper only dares to talk about abandoning strategic ambiguity because he is no longer in office, and he said that the U.S. knows that participating in a war in the Taiwan Straits would mean suicide for American troops. The video also shows footage of Chinese naval and aerial forces participating in military exercises.
