Former Khamenei Advisor: Mahsa Amini Died While Police Was Enforcing Law against Public Nudity [Video]

Mohammad-Javad Larijani, a former advisor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, said in a September 29, 2022 interview on Channel 3 (Iran) that it is highly likely that Russia will use nuclear weapons in its war with Ukraine. He said that Iran is concerned about the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and he said that in the future, Iran may have to reconsider its defense policies and “think about” turning to nuclear weapons. Later in the interview, Larijani said that the recent “tensions” in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman who died after being arrested and beaten by Iran’s “morality police” for wearing her hijab improperly, are an American and Zionist conspiracy against Iran. Larijani claimed that Amini had died after “suddenly” collapsing, and he defended the Iranian authorities for enforcing limitations on “public nudity”, which he said exist in every country. Larijani also currently serves as the secretary of the Iranian judiciary’s High Council for Human Rights, and he has previously served as Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister and in other senior positions. Texas Islamic Scholar Compares Iranian Hijab Protests to “Fighting for Nudity Rights in Texas" [Video]

In a video posted to the East Plano Islamic Center’s YouTube channel on September 29, 2022, prominent American Islamic scholar Yasir Qadhi spoke about the protests that have been taking place in Iran since the recent death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman who died after being beaten and arrested by Iran’s “morality police” for wearing her hijab “improperly”. He said that there is a “double standard” in the West, pointing out that those who support the anti-hijab protests are not fighting for people’s rights to walk around naked in the West. He argued that most of the world’s countries have laws against public nudity and indecency. He also said that there is a hidden Western political and financial agenda at play that has nothing to do with the dignity of Iranian women. He added: “What is happening here is a vicious chess game and you are seeing only one move.” For more about Yasir Qadhi, see MEMRI TV Clips Nos. 9417, 8433, 8401, 7640, and 7451.

#NAFO and Winning the Information War: Lessons Learned from Ukraine [Video]

Concerns about the scale and reach of Moscow’s disinformation capabilities have been mounting for years. Yet the war in Ukraine – and the online discourse surrounding that war – arguably demonstrates that the information landscape has shifted, and that new opportunities and methods exist for countering disinformation machines. Not only has the Ukrainian government demonstrated a masterful ability to shape the international narratives surrounding the war, the North Atlantic Fellas Organization (#NAFO) – NAFO--an organic, online gaggle of pro-Ukraine supporters that has gained the attention of policymakers and global leaders for their creative use of digital media to take on key sources of Russian disinformation. This discussion will examine several questions. What does the activity of #NAFO tell us about information warfare today and in the future? What broader lessons can be drawn from the Ukraine experiences? What risks arise from these kinds of information warfare, and how might they be mitigated? Kathleen J. McInnis, Senior Fellow, International Security Program and Director, Smart Women, Smart Power Initiative at CSIS will be joined by Seth G. Jones, Senior Vice President, Harold Brown Chair, and Director of the International Security Program at CSIS; Emily Harding, Deputy Director and Senior Fellow in the International Security Program at CSIS; Matt Moores (USMC, ret.), NAFO Co-founder; and Iuliia Mendel, (Virtual from Ukraine), Ukrainian journalist and President Zelenskyy’s former spokesperson.
