Egyptian Islamic scholar Younes Makhioun, the chairman of the Al-Nour Party, said in a lecture posted to his Facebook account on November 26, 2022 that Muslims who watch soccer and the World Cup matches are wasting their time, and that sports are only useful to Muslims to the extent that they make them stronger for worshipping Allah and waging Jihad. He also criticized people for admiring soccer stars who are “infidels,” “heretics,” and “deviants,” such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. In addition, he said that in accordance with the Islamic principle of “allegiance and disavowal,” Muslims should only hate and love other people based on faith and adherence to Allah, rather than based on which soccer team they support. He added that there is no need to be proud of an Arab country (i.e. Qatar) for hosting the World Cup, since Muslims should be proud of other things. He elaborated: “For example, they could have produced a nuclear bomb, like Iran has.”
On November 19, 2022, Awda TV (Palestinian Authority) aired a ceremony held by Al-Quds Open University in the West Bank city of Ramallah commemorating the 18th anniversary of Yasser Arafat’s death. At the ceremony, an emcee praised Fatah and all its related Palestinian factions throughout history, and he said: “Oh brigades of Abu Ammar [i.e. Yasser Arafat]! Tell them with bullets, not words, that Jerusalem is Arab alone!” Hussein Hamayel, a Fatah spokesman who also serves as the director of the Ramallah and Al-Bireh branch of Al-Quds Open University, also spoke at the ceremony, and he praised the Palestinian “martyrs” and prisoners.
On November 8, 2022, an official animated “promotional video” showcasing the capabilities of China’s new Wing Loong 3 long-range combat drone, developed by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, was posted to the Chinese-language “Military Fans” YouTube channel. The animation showcases the drone’s anti-submarine, anti-aircraft, ground strike, maritime strike, search and rescue, and reconnaissance capabilities. Notably, it depicts the drone destroying radar trucks on an island.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said in a November 19, 2022 address that aired on Channel 1 (Iran) that the fact that Iran is advancing and flourishing is “intolerable and unbearable” for the West and for the “arrogant” United States. He said that all the pressure Iran is facing is because it has been advancing and because it has stood up to the West’s “bullying”, and he criticized all the American presidents since Jimmy Carter for opposing Iran. He also referred to U.S. President Joe Biden as a “demented guy”, and he told the audience to “turn” all their shouts against America. The audience chanted: “Death to America!”
This clip is a compilation of Iranians protesting against the Iranian regime before and after the soccer match between Iran and England at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Iranian fans attending the match can be seen booing and shouting while the Iranian national anthem was played before the match, while the national team players refused to sing the anthem. In addition, protesters in Tehran can be seen celebrating England’s victory and chanting: “Death to the dictator!” The footage in this clip is from various online sources.
Abbas Haji Najjari, who serves as an advisor to the cultural deputy of the Iranian Chief-of-Staff, said in a November 14, 2022 interview on Mayadeen TV (Lebanon) that the Western “powers of arrogance” are behind the riots in Iran. He said that “the enemy” wants to cause an internal war in Iran by using “terrorist groups” based in Iraqi Kurdistan, and he explained that this is why Iran recently carried out strikes against targets in Iraqi Kurdistan (see MEMRI TV Clip No. 9936). Najjari also said that Israel extremely afraid of Iran and that because in recent military exercises, Iran’s armed forces effectively targeted a model of the Dimona nuclear reactor. He added that all of Israel’s “sensitive facilities” are within Iran’s reach. In addition, he said that all the American bases in the region are within Iran’s range and that this is one of the reasons that the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan and Iraq.
This clip is a compilation of videos posted to various social media networks between November 13 and November 16, 2022 of protesters throughout Iran lighting fires in the streets and torching public buildings and posters of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Ghasem Soleimani. The protesters also chanted slogans such as “Death to Khamenei!” and “This is the year of bloody [uprising], Seyed Ali [Khamenei] will be toppled!”
On November 10, 2022, Channel 2 (Iran) aired an animated video produced by the Basij’s Center for Digital Art that “analyzes” America’s police. The video depicts irresponsible policemen harassing and targeting black Americans while letting white people get away with crime. In one scene, white people set fire to a black man. In another scene, a policeman shoots a black child who is playing with a handgun while ignoring a white boy who is on his way to carry out a school shooting. Zaynab Nasrallah, the daughter of Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, said in a November 10, 2022 show on Al-Manar TV (Hizbullah-Lebanon) that when her brother Hadi Nasrallah was “martyred” by Israeli forces in 1997, her father and her mother did not shed a “single tear.” She said that her mother was not being obtuse by not crying, but rather that she was convinced of the path of Jihad that Hadi had chosen from a young age. Zaynab elaborated that her mother had said that Hadi had “made a shortcut” to the afterlife and had not allowed an atmosphere of mourning after his death. Rather, Zaynab said that there was an atmosphere of pride and honor. The show host then invited Zaynab’s son, who is also named Hadi, to the stage, and he brought with him the uniform that Hadi Nasrallah had worn while “waging Jihad.” Hadi Nasrallah was killed in battle with the Israeli military in September 1997.
On November 14, 2022, a video of an Afghan woman singing a Dari version of the Italian protest song “Bella Ciao” was posted to the Baban Seqizi Twitter account. The woman sings: “We may not witness another day, a new day and a new death. In the streets calls for uprising… We will shout until we are freed from force and tyranny… We will not fear nor waver, we are here until our last breath.”
On November 17, 2022, the Nation of Islam shared on its Facebook page an excerpt from a lecture by leader Louis Farrakhan that was originally delivered on June 1, 2013. In the lecture, Farrakhan said that he focuses on the Jews more than other “problems” faced by the black community because they are the “open enemy” of black people and are using them as a “tool and a willing slave.” He referred to the Jews as the “synagogue of Satan,” and he said that “Satanic Jews” wrote the Talmud. Khamenei’s representative in the Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province Nassir Hosseini said in a Friday, November 11, 2022 sermon in Yasuj, Iran that Iran’s new Ghaem-100 satellite missile launcher can also function as an ICBM that can strike the United States, as well as targets in space. He explained that the missile has a range of 12,000 kilometers, which is enough to reach the United States, and he said that this is a “message” for Iran’s enemies.
